The Gezhou Ba (Dam) is currently
one of the biggest in China. It is 47 m high and supplies much
of the electricity used by Shanghai down river. This lock allows
the boats to pass upstream.
The Three Gorges Dam will dwarf
this one though. It will be 195 m high and will raise the water
level 175 m (575 feet)! A series of five locks like this one will
be set in steps to allow boat passage.
