From the Imperial Palace we went South to Tiantan, the Temple of Heaven.

This is where the Emperor would travel (only several miles) to make sacrifices to keep the heavens and earth in harmony. Heaven is considered to be round and earth to be square so this is a round temple in a square courtyard.

It too is built with sandalwood columns imported from southern China and was built entirely without nails.
