Spacecraft Configuration

IMAGE and POLAR are in nearly the same orbital plane (and will remain so). On October 4 they were nearly perfectly in the X-Z plane and at 09:39 UT both were nearly at apogee.

During a single orbit there are typically periods when POLAR and IMAGE provide simultaneous ENA observations of the magnetosphere from two vantage points. There are other intervals when POLAR provides in situ observations of the magnetosphere (including ion composition) while IMAGE provides remotely-sensed ENA observations.

Note that POLAR now measures the equatorial magnetosphere near geosynchronous orbit and is moving outward.

We also show the Cluster orbit although no data is yet available. In addition to multi-point in situ observations, Cluster should have similar ENA imaging capability as POLAR.
