Audience / Purpose
This workshop is part of the "informal" series of meetings on
relativistic electrons that have in the past been organized by Bernie
Blake on Maui. Since we would like to keep these meeting informal
and manageable, they have been by initiation only. We aim
to limit the workshop to 30-35 people.
The workshop is targeted at active researchers in the field of
energetic electron dynamics in the inner magnetosphere, who are
involved in either data analysis, modeling or theory of the the
acceleration, transport and loss of these particles. Since the
understanding of the inner magnetospheric electron dynamics depends to
a very large degree on the understanding of the dynamic magnetic field,
the modeling and specification of the storm-time magnetic fields is
becoming an active part of this work.
If you feel that an invitation should be extended to a researcher not
on the current distribution list for this workshop please get in touch
with the
conference organizer (Contact
Information).
The purpose of the workshop is to review our current state of knowledge
and to present and discuss the latest results for energetic electron
dynamics. To provide focus we will concentrate on one specific
event and will plan a joint publication on this event.
Event: July 20-30, 2004 - one of the largest relativistic
electron events to date. DST is only -180 here, but the GOES
relativistic electron fluxes are the highest observed to date.

Workshop on Energetic Electron Radiation Belt Dynamics
Hermanus Magnetic Observatory, Hermanus, South Africa, March 07-11, 2005
Conference Site, Fees and Support
The workshop will be held at the Hermanus
Magnetic Observatory (HMO) located in the coastal resort town
of Hermanus, South
Africa, 120 km east of Cape Town.
Thanks to a generous offer by our HMO hosts we will be able to use the
conference facilities at HMO, which include internet access. We
will provide both wireless and port access, and overhead plus digital
projectors.
For travel details and maps please refer to Travel to Hermanus / Maps.
We have obtained funding from the Los Alamos National Laboratory
(LANL) Institute of Geophysical and Planetary Physics (IGPP) to provide
some travel/registration support for PostDocs to attend this meeting.
Some travel support for other attendees may be available as well.
If you are in need of support please get in touch with the
conference organizer (Contact
Information).
The registration fee will be R1000 (~US$150) which will include
refreshments
during the workshop and one workshop function. To keep
payment
arrangements simple we will only accept cash payments on-site in South

Travel to Hermanus / Maps
Travel to South Africa may require a Visa - please check for Visa
Exempt Countries here. Should your country not be part of
that
list you can apply for your visa at your nearest South
African Embassy / Consulate.
The closest international airport to Hermanus is Cape Town
International, 105km from Hermanus.
From the US the only carrier that serves Cape Town is South African Airways,
code-shared with Delta,
from Atlanta. You can also go via Europe to South Africa on most major
European airlines, which makes it a two day journey. Airfares are
around $1250.
From Cape Town International you can rent a car with most major rental
companies. We will have one rental van available for pickup and
drop-off at the airport, for arrivals on Sunday, March 6th, at 10:35 on
SA210 - departure transport will be arranged on site.
