Abstract:
Although principally designed for the {\em in-situ} detection of energetic magnetospheric ions, it was recognized even before launch that the Polar CEPPAD/IPS instrument should also be capable of detecting the charge-exchange energetic neutral atoms emitted from the inner magnetosphere. After three years of continuous operations in orbit, the ENA-imaging capabilities of the instrument has far exceeded our initial expectations. The near ideal orbit of the Polar spacecraft allows us to monitor the ring current for many hours at a time during both storm-time and quiet-time conditions. And we have obtained the first ever ENA images of individual substorm injections. In this presentation, we review the progress made so far with the analysis and modeling of the Polar ENA imagery and discuss some exciting new approaches we are currently exploring.
