The January 1997 magnetic storm provided the most complete picture to date of a relativistic electron event. But, how typical were the responses observed during that storm? In this paper we investigate a large number of geomagnetic storms and their associated relativistic electron responses. We use data from geosynchronous orbit, GPS, POLAR, SAMPEX, and CRRES to examine the simultaneous relativistic electron responses at different local times, different L-shells, and different magnetic latitudes. We will present both statistical analyses and specific case studies to investigate the general properties of relativistic electron events, the relationship to magnetic storms at solar maximum and solar minimum, and the specific properties of acceleration and transport in the three-dimensional magnetosphere.
