1999 GEM-CEDAR-SHINE

Workshop Report

Convenor(s): Michael Buonsanto, Janet Kozyra, and Dave Webb
Date/Time: 01:15 - 05:30 on June 18, 1999

Summary:

This workshop was the kick off event for a joint CEDAR-GEM-SHINE magnetic
storms campaign. The purpose of the magnetic storm campaign is to compare
and contrast a small number of well-observed magnetic cloud events with the
aim of isolating and understanding some of the most pressing science issues
involved in the generation of CMEs, their association with interplanetary
magnetic clouds, the interaction of magnetic clouds with the interplanetary
medium, and the response of the terrestrial environment.

Selected Events

* 15-18 May 1997
* 24 Sep - 01 Oct 1998
(also an ISTP event study, ISR World Days were 21-25 Sep)
* 18-31 October 1998
(ISR World Days were 19-21 Oct)

Invited speakers (representing all 3 communities) were asked to provide an
overview of observations and identify science issues that might be addressed
by a comparison of the selected events. A pdf summary of the workshop talks
is now available at http://leadbelly.lanl.gov/GEM_Storms/welcome.html.
Descriptions, contact information, and links to relevant data sets and/or
plots for these storm intervals are also being collected at this URL.
